Is there another option other than the A.K.C. They are such a joke. I can't stand that my dogs are even affiliated with them!!! I didn't register my last litter with them and the dogs sold just fine..What's everyones position?
WHEN I SEE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL, I'D BE WILLING TO DIE PROTECTING IT.
Try Working Shepard Breeders Association. I think they are here for the long haul, and they have a very legit purpose, to ATTEMPT to register only working shepards, German, Belgian, and dutch. try google, I don't have the url at the moment, I'm not on my puter. I know what you mean I would love to see AKC's demise. Look on the bright side theres always a chance that tommorow we'll see on the news that AKC's CEO has been up to Enron type stuff and they will fold in a day .
There is a lot to dislike about the Akc, however they are a registry, and not responsible for the good or bad breeding. The breeds parent club is "supposed" to be responsible. In short we need a better breed club, or stronger breed club to make the current club obsolete, at least I think that would be a good start. It all comes down to whats available to the new and old to the breed. There are a lot of people breeding sub-standard dogs out there. what to do about it gets a little crazy. on the one hand who says what is sub-standard? then who's definition is right? what if you hated the guy that was the breed warden? what if he hated you? how do you get good at breeding? the amount of crap that could come to mind is endless. The Akc is just there to keep track of who's parents are who how could they even start to pass judgement on one breed and its breeders let alone 150. Ever try to get 6 people to decide where to go to dinner?
Jeff, I agree that the breed clubs should really step to the plate and be the true keepers of the breed; meaning educating the public, policing bad breeders, and adhering to the standards of the country of orgin.
AKC is only a registry, but unfortunately it is too easy to falsely register a dog....or one that doesn't even begin to meet the breed standard. (Remember the tri-colored GSDs? They got registered simply because the parents were. So now there are tri-color genes in the pool...)
Imho, until AKC gets really strict on proving identities (ie, DNA proof BEFORE registration is allowed), the registry will always be suspect. And, perhaps requiring DNA proof for registration may also put some puppy mills out of business. It would be too much trouble and too big an expense for those breeding only for profit and on a thin margin. .
And the swab for the DNA be done by someone from the breed club, not just "heres your kit, this is what you do." I would like to see this done before they could get thier titles. I know a lot of rotts with dobe ancestry, goldens with lab and vice versa. It is a monumental nightmare
