I got back from the vet today after doing a quickie ultrasound on my Czech bitch - we saw two pups right off the bat, the bitch is at day 32 after breeding.
Soooo....what's the most accurate test to find out the exact number of puppies before whelping? Doing an ABD x-ray one week before delivery date?
Man, this breeding is a lot of work! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Such wisdom comming from someone so young. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I just don't want a replay of my last breeding, in which the vet told me that my Rottie bitch had at least six pups but there were actually only three. That made for a long and anxiety filled evening, and although that happened over 12 years ago, I just don't want a repeat of that type of situation.
Plus, I try and be a prepared kinda guy! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I've always done xrays wk before due date. Has been pretty accurate providing the vet knows what to look for. Even Oxana's last litter of 12 we could count, but we also allowed for the possibility of maybe one more, but there were ONLY 12. (10 survived).
After whelping dozens of litters I can say that I don't do xrays or ultrasounds unless medically necessary.
Just my opinion, but why expose the mom and all those unborn pups to radiation just to have a head count? who knows what the long term effect will be on the puppies? I am not willing to do it unless there is a problem.
I can think of 2 people that have done x-rays ahead of time and the count was still wrong anyway! If the pups "overlap" it can be hard to get a clear view of them.
I am with Cindy on this one.. the only time I xray is if i think there may be only one pup.. sometimes when this is the case..momdoesn't go into whelp.
