check out dogo.org Dogo's are actually bred for big game hunting. ALOT of boar hunters use dogos, you might want to research "dogoman" he hunts for a living and knows TONS about hunting and dogos and he is also a breeder. He will definitely be able to answer ANY questions you have regarding hunting dogs.
I'm not really sure. It would depend on your hunting style. Some people prefer "silence" and with dogos the only time they bark is when they get their catch to let the hunter know and usually only 1 dog will bark. I'm not really sure I've never gone hunting before but these are what some of the hunters have shared.
And the thing with other breed they bark alot and it sometimes confuses the whole pack or will give away their position, stuff like that
BUT there are alot of hunters that also use other breeds. I hope I don't get booted for this but check out dogo.org There are tons of hunters that go on that site, I'm sure they would love to share some info. not all of them also just use dogos when they hunt. and alot of the hunters also com from different countries so its always interesting to read the different styles and such.
If it is "illegal" to share other board forum addresses jsut ignore this i guess lol.
Don't know if he's still around but there used to be a guy in Tenn, I think. He had some fantastic airedales that he raised for hog dog competition an wild hog hunting. If you find a good airedale, they can do just about anything you want. I considered them before I got my GSD but the ones this guy had were a little to sharp for SAR. I think they would have made great sport or even protection dogs.
Yee haw Dogs on hogs, now that is a sport I could do , but unforunatley I am a yankee I have owned Kemmer cur ( for squirrel) and I have hunted racoon over blackmouth and leporad cur that a friend owned (sp) . I acutally contemplated getting a blackmouth cur to try and train for PP , before I got my Mal Enjoy those hunting dogs: they are actually reasonably priced and you dont need a catch dog if you have good track and bay dogs. a big hog can really cut up and gut a dog bad. I love to watch those hog and dog videos
I'm with Robert, APBTs are the best catch dogs I've used. I've also had Dogos, Black mouth curs, florida curs, ABs, and Catahoulas. For baying I've found nothing beats a plott hound. The dogs are great for a little bit different type of hunt. They scent and catch on their own which can get them killed very easily if you're not close behind (it's usually very difficult to keep up with dogs in hog counrty).
Hogs are very dangerous critters, I've seen them do a lot of damage to people and dogs alike. Few scars myself
