As I prepare for my next two litters I am reminded of three pups from three different litters of two different breeds that had severe hernias! In other words the insides were out! We did emergency surgery on all three pups, (my vet is becoming an expert!) of the three, the first one (Giant Schnauzer)had too much damage to the bowel, he survived the surgery, but died later that day. The second one (Dobermann) was just a little runt, but feisty as hell, survived and is kicking butt in Texas! The third (Giant Schnauzer) likely would have survived the hernia had she not aspirated on placenta! :-(
Has anyone experienced this kind of problem before? Any suggestions? I had one suggest that it was a genetic thing, and had they all come from one breed or one bitch, I'd give that some merrit, but as it is it doesn't wash with me. If anyone has any input, I'd be interested to hear it! Now I get real stressed during whelping! Not good for my girls!
One reason is to much pulling on the cord. Eather the human helping or the mother while severing it with her teeth. Be there. take the pup as it comes out, along with the placentia, dont let anything pull on it. Tie it off,(Iuse unwaked floss) and cut the cord 1/4 inch. I may get one small hernia in twenty or thirty.
Good luck.

Hi Ron, thanks for your reply! Believe me, I am there with my "catcher's mit" when my pups are whelped. The first case is a bit blurry in my memory, however I know that when my little dobe came shooting out, he basically snapped off as soon as he hit the air! Fortunately I had experience from earlier that same day (yes two litters Giants and Dobes, same day!! ) and we were able to apply pressure immediately until we got him to the vet. I think with my Dobe, her weak contractions were definitely a factor since the pup would be born but the placenta was many contractions later! I am trying Solid Gold's Concept-A-Bitch this time to see if she has an easier time with things. Hopefully no more hernias, and less stress!
