My female german shepherd just had a litter of 5 puppies all born breathing and normal. She had them in a hole she dug herself the day of the birth in my backyard. After she was done i moved the puppies to a whelping box. Yet she keeps moving puppies back to the outside hole. I would put it back with the litter about 4-5 hr. would go by and she would do it again then she started to do it less often now doing it about twice a day. At first i thought one pup might be sick but she didn't move the same pup, she would move different ones and one time moved them all. What i'm worried about is that she throws dirt around and might cover a pup. Any ideas why she is doing this?????????????????????????????
Dogs are den animals, she obviously has a strong instinct to keep the pups in the den she dug for them. Ever watch wolves or other wild canids on nature shows?
You shouldn't let females whelp in dirt. That tells me something right there. Bury the hole and cover it with something big and heavy.
