I have a 15 week old GSD. I have bought the tapes - Puppies 8 weeks to 8 months and Basic Obedience.
A week ago I started training the sit and down commands with food and it is going pretty good.
However, I think I am confusing my dog. For instance, I might train for 5 minutes with the down command and she gets it pretty good. Later in the day I will try 5 minutes of the sit command but she will lie down hoping to get the treat. It takes a few times before I get her to just sit. Later in the day I might try the sit again.
Should I train both at the same age or should I wait until she is good enough at the sit before I move to the down?
What about the other commands? When should I train those?
she's not confused - she's still just a baby and hasn't quite got it figured out yet. she's starting to anticipate what you're going to ask her to do to get the treat, and that's part of the learning process.
keep it short and keep it fun. 2-3 minutes at a time is plenty, and make it a game that she always wins.
most of all, be patient. they grow up fast enough.
