I have read (here) about dogs getting locked into prey drive.
What should I do to avoid this? What do I watch out for?
I'll be getting Ed's tape on First steps in Defense Drive as soon as some $$$ free's up (also the new Flink tape), but want to make sure I don't screw up my dog.
BTW - thanks for the usefull advise - this board alone make the cost of internet access worthwhile - and my pup is now hitting the sleeve nicely. Again, Thanks.
This is my expertise. If you can call screwing up a dog an expertise. I can bring out prey drive in a turtle but this talent comes with a price. I get my dogs so frantic for their prey item that they will take an extraordinary amount of abuse because they know in the end they will get their prey. Pair this with my love of hard temperaments and you have a dog that you can cut off his leg and will still be fixed on the sleeve. How do you avoid this? Easy when you feel that your dog has developed a foundation of prey and a full calm grip stop bite work until he is old enough to introduce defense. There are a few things you can do with a young dog to prepare him for this, which Ed goes into in his video.
