I am looking at purchasing a 9month old puppy with superb bloodlines, unfortunatly her previous owners had her debarked at 6 months old I was hoping for a schutzhund dog with her, but beings her bark is now muted (still there, just kind of like a whisper) would she be able to be titled???
what exactly is debarking, and what does this process involve? why would you debark a dog? Is this even legal? I know that in the UK its illegal to dock a tail, let alown debark a dog.
Forgive my ignorance but isnt this just a little bit cruel? Isnt it just like muting a child?
I guess this isnt pertenent to the post but i have never heard this before. I Dont mean to offend anyone, Simply curious.
Yep, it is legal. Popular with the show crowd for small yappy dogs.
They cut or burn the vocal cords enough so that the dog can not bark. If done by a vet and under anesthesia it is no worse than having a cat declawed.
I don't see why your dog could not still title. I would explain the situation to the judge prior to the start of the trial. The volume of the bark is not so much what they are looking for, it is the intensity to hold the helper and not be looking for help from mommy. That can be seen in a debarked dog. Silent guards are also possible, but you better have a very intense dog.
I had a doberman who was debarked before I bought him at 2. That bark was WAY more annoying than a normal bark. It just sounds like they are very hoarse.
Shannon,
Yes the dog could be titled, But I'm not sure if most judges wouldn't give some kind of point deduction for a dog who's bark and hold was sub-vocal.
Some dogs do the bark and hold just leaping and snapping, they never bark. For the silent dogs that I've seen in trials, the critiques of those dogs always including a blurb from the judge about the dog not vocalizing.
Tim,
Debarking is done by the vet, usually the dogs vocal cords are cauterized under anesthesia. It was common to see whole kennnels of dogs from breeds that were yappy ( a lot of Shelties were done in the past like that ) It's a show dog thing.
Many vets won't even do the procedure anymore.
