I still recommend scratch pants from Paul Horton of Horton Leatherworks in Alabama.
The pants are so over-engineer'd that the qualify as family heirlooms, they literally last for decades.
I also agree that leather pants offer the best quality and durability. I’ve owned a pair of Schweikert Fully Padded Leather pants and they were superb but they have their drawbacks. The weight being the main one. If you are working a lot of dogs, the sun is up and it’s the middle of summer the fact that you’re wearing 4,5kg pants won’t escape your attention… This being said, I still think they’re the best pair I’ve ever owned.
Since I couldn’t live with the weight I bought a pair of Aero (other names: Astro, Soft Air, etc. depending on the company. All the same material) pants from Schweikert (3/4 padded). These have a much better weight (don’t know how much exactly). They offer almost as good protection from bites as the leather pants. One drawback is that the material is less flexible than leather.
I also own a pair of Gappay Magic pants. These are the most comfortable with a weigh of 0.8kg but I only use them for competitions because they’re really thin and if a dog bites you they’ll stop it from detaching the muscles from you bones, but not much more.
No pants will give you the protection of a bite suite, so you might as well get something a little comfortable, flexible and not to heavy
What experiences do you have with the materials out there? I’d love to settle for one type of pants but I can’t make up my mind… That’s my problem of course, but I’d still love to hear your opinions…
