Update:
I have been doing obedience in his crate. I have gotten to the point where i can tell him down stay and he will listen. He will lay there and just drool. He will not break the down stay though. The minute I leave him alone and he knows i am not watching, he begins to act up.
I also had a problem with him acting up, while i was driving. I couldn't correct him and drive at the same time. The solution i came up with, was to turn the crate around in my Jeep so he could see me while i drove. It worked, he will mind as long as he knows i can correct him.
I only made one minor mistake, When i had the crate turned facing me, I left the vehicle and he accidentally got out of the crate and ate a softball sized hole in my front seat.
Sounds like you are right on track.
Keep up the good work.
If need be, run a long line (NOT A FLEXI)from the kennel to the front seat of your car and then over your right shoulder. This way you can give a correction if needed. NOTE: I am not saying drive unsafely. I'm saying practice first while not driving then take it on the road after a few days.
Finding a shopping mall after hours helps to work out any problems. Here I go again telling a policeman to do something illigal.
Also, to resolve the breaking of the down and seat chewing, Leave the kennel open and get out of site for two seconds correct the dog if he moves. Then increase the time and frequency of leaving the car as the weeks go on. Good luck Kojak.
I know it's been over a year since my last reply, but i had to write back. After dealing with this problem for a long time now, it is finally resolved. I recently attended an e-collar seminar
by Fred Hasssen of No Limitations and learned the proper way to use the e-collar. In one day the problem was corrected and weeks later a total behavior change. I still have to correct him ocassionally, but it is only to keep him in check.
