I know that food allergies is an issue with many dogs, but I agree that the weather could also be a cause for scratching.
I live in the south and normally LACK of humdity is not a problem! However, there are a few weeks in the winter where humdity may get 40 or lower and I've noticed that's when our dogs then start their scratching routine. Especially true on low temp days when the heater comes on regularly in the house (we do not have a winter humdifier).
Since we've not changed the food for our dogs in many months and there is no evidence of fleas (they're on Frontline)...AND they're both shedding some undercoat, I don't think food allergies is the problem in our case.
Their scratching is driving me nuts though, especially at night. Though on the floor, they lean against the bed frame and scratch. Arrgh! Shakes one awake!
