Wanted to know if anyone else has a dog with a similar quality? More than once I have palyfully tossed a down comforter, or a sweater over my GSD's head (obscuring eyes, ears and nose). He makes no effort to remove it at all and seems quite content to keep it there, much to the delight and amusement of any and all humans present at the time. He will navigate the apartment, sweater on head, till he finds a place to lie, flop down, exhale and relax. In one instance he even popped up, approached the door, gave his "warning barks" at noise in the hallway outside my apartment, all without disengaging from the sweater over his head.
Is there any particular canine dynamic that explains this comfort despite sensory deprivation? I'm certainly no expert, but most dogs I'm aware of, get stuff off their heads as fast as they can.
A couple years ago a fellow by the name of Stan Coren made a fortune selling a book titled "The Intelligence of Dogs". I believe one of the tests that he used to judge intelligence was to see how quickly a dog would remove a towel from on top of its head.
Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend; inside of a dog it's too dark to read. -Groucho Marx
My first Rottie liked to knock over his five-gallon water bucket, put his head in it, and run around the yard like a mad thing with the bucket on his head.
Maybe he was ahead of his time.
