Is a 5 month old pup to young to young for the prong? BTW this will be used just for walking. Also do you think it is wrong to make a dog walk right beside you all the time? This is what I am wanting to acheive with my non working dog.
Mike,
Depends on the size of the dog, the character and control level you wish to achieve. Whatever you do, stay away from the chain choke collars. (JMO) Those chokers do litte else than annoy the dog and constrict it's windpipe. Prongs, used and fitted properly are the way to go. If you choose to not use the prong now, go with a flat leather collar.
Jerry
I have a prong for my 4 mos old GSD. He's about 45 lb and definitely a hard dog. I gave so many leash corrections during our walks, I figured it would be better for me to get the prong than to yank on his neck every 3 minutes. Plus it was starting to hurt my arm. Now he's a joy to walk on the four foot leash. I also keep the collar on in the house. He bites hard, just locks onto me. He ignores no and likes the taste of the bitter spray. I can't scruff him anynore, he doesn't cry out no matter how hard I do it. So now when he bites, he gets a gentle tug on the prong collar and he's an angel. I use one sized for a smaller dog, fine weight and I put rubber tips on the ends.
