This is a method that I heard about elsewhere, I have tried it and it works so well, I have to share it with you. If you have a dog that has locked down on something, anything. A sure way to get the dog to instantly open the mouth is put some of your spit, yes spit, on your finger and wipe it on the dog's nose. The immediate response from the dog is to lick the spit, thereby opening his mouth. This is great for the times Rin Tin Tin picks up that chicken bone and won't let go without beating the c**p out of him.
I thought this was a joke until I tried it on my Rottie, works every time. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Angela,
I haven't tried the nose rub but the spit on the nose response is instantaneous. Might help us bond with those big goofy dogs too.

Jerry,
I was out walking my 4mth old Golden female last night and, when she picked up a rib bone she found in the street, I thought of your trick to get her to drop it. Didn't work! So I slobbered on my hand and wiped it across her nose again, and she just pulled away and tried to run, bone still in her mouth! Meanwhile, my husband's yelling "What the hell are you doing?!" It was comical.
Guess there are some things not worth giving up, no matter what!
Proud Mom of Abbey (aka "Moo") - my true soul mate...I miss you terribly and will see you at the bridge...

I think you may have to condition the dog to what you are doing, my male responded immediately with no practice. My female needed to have it done to her several times with nothing to give up. After several practice runs she was giving up anything I gave her. It really does look so ridiculous.
