I have a great 1.5 year old male GSD from police service lines. He is a great dog with unbelievable drives, very intelligent, quick and eager to learn, extremely athletic and has a tough vise grip bite. But he is strange dog aggressive.
My question is, should he not be bred? Will he pass this on to his offspring?
I have read where they get dog aggressive from imprinting because of early experiences with their mother or other dogs abusing them. His mother did kill half the litter.
I guess my question is, is dog aggression hereditary? Or is it just a traumatic experience that causes it like a woman getting raped and she now hates all men?
He's only aggressive toward strange dogs. But I sure wouldn't want this flaw passed on to his offspring.
It can either be genetic or learned. If a pup is attacked by another dog when it's young, it'll most likely be dog aggressive or at least fearful for the rest of its life.
But a lot of times it is passed on...Mink-bred dogs come to mind, a lot of them are very dog aggressive.
Aren't you beining a bit premature worrying about the dogs worthiness as stud at this stage of the game? If he's only 18 months old you are a long time before you will be thinking about breeding him.
Have you gotten his BH yet? You shouldn't even think of breeding him until you obtain at least his SchH I title anyway.
And how were his hip prelims? Since he can't be OFA'd until he's two years old, there's another reason that you don't even need to be asking this question.
Once your dog is titled and hip OFA's - ask the question. Until then, you're just wasting your time even thinking about it.
