Typically 10 generations is required to make a new breed. However, we've seen some of the first lines of doodle dogs with more than 10 generations and no recognition, and working lines like the colorado bulldogs with only 2-3 generations to be acknowledged as its own breed.
Will, I live in Jacksonville. I train Rico, my 11 month old male Donovan Pinscher with Jay & Scott & hope to get an ASR title on him. Don't know if he's got it in him but, we're going to try. He's my first working dog so we have lots to learn and as long as it stays fun for us, we'll stay with it. I'm encouraged by the positive posts here but, the few not so positive posts in this thread concerns me. Not because i'm thin skinned but, I worry about my dog being unfairly judged or ruined in training or competition by anyone who has already made up their mind about the DP. I only ask for people to keep an open mind. I feel very comfortable with Jay & Scott & I think they like Rico. He's been on a sleeve once & that was with Jay a few months ago...he can tell you way more than I can about that. I'm pretty happy with him so far...plenty of dog for me. Whether he can title in ASR or be a protection dog, I don't know. Anyhow, you'll probably meet Rico soon...he's as social as they come...I hope you like him.
Cool, Luis - I'm looking forward to meeting you and your dog!
Please don't let my comments about the American Bulldog/ DP / Chris Carr incident make you think that I'm negative against the DP as a breed, I'm actually eager to learn more about them. I think that they actually have the highest potential for reality-based protection sport out of all the mastiff based breeds ( once again...as long as they breed true, that'll be the biggie ).
Chris is an experienced handler and knew better than to try and pull what he did at that trial - that was an embarrassment to handlers everywhere.
Hey Luis, let me know when and if you get over to train with Will for a day or so, and I'll try and come down then also (weekend). I'm long over due for some free chow from Will (that lil breakfast joint is calling me I'm intrested in seeing a DP,never seen one.
Look forward to meeting you Will. Actually, I make frequent work trips to NAS Pensacola & when possible, I bring Rico with me. If Capital Canine isn't too far from I-10, I may drop in on you guys one day. Will, I think you'll agree that whatever comments or opinions are made about the DP are just that...in the end the only thing that matters is its ability to do the work the breeder says it will do. I guess time will tell.
I tried to stay out of this as long as possible...however...
I don't know that much about DP's, and I've never met Dom Donovan. I've seen exactly two DP's in my life. One named Ebony is owned by a good trainer in the Tampa area, and I have to tell you that this dog is every bit as good as any Mal I've ever seen and better than most. The other one is Luis' dog Rico.
Rico has been a slow starter, but seems to have all the tools for the work. Extremely social, and not a frayed nerve on the boy. Very solid dog.
Unfortunately, our training schedule, coupled with Luis' trips to Iraq and Ashcanistan have limited the dogs exposure to bite work. Time will tell if he has the 'stuff', but we like what we see so far.
I was looking at this thread and stuck between, COOL new breed, and what the F how about keeping the breeds we got out of the toilet. I then thought,. If they bite, what do I care?
You're exactly right, Jeff. A good dog is where you find it. I don't care what breed it is, if it'll work, I'll work it
