Hey all. Just getting ready for my 6mo GSD pup to start tracking. I've been reading Patterson's "Tracking: From the Beginning".
However, I have questions that I didn't find in his book.
Question 1: Does it matter what type of footwear I use to make my tracks? Boots, sneakers, cleats? Rubber sole, EVA, leather, plastic?
Question 2: Should I always use the same footwear when imprinting my pup at the beginning?
I understand that dogs probably smell a combination of vegitation, bacteria, rafts and human related smells (shoes, etc.). Just wondering how footwear played into it.
On that note...should I let my legs get all nice and dry...so I'm "raft rich" when I lay my track?
Nope, it probably doesn't make any difference in the material of the shoes used, but leather holds odor better from the data that I've seen.
And I'd wear the same shoes/ boots for each track, especially if you do footprint-to-footprint tracking - the extra odor of a little food on your shoes won't hurt in the beginning of this type of training.
