Hello everybody,
So, one can track with food.
Or one can track with ball or using articles (no food)
What is the preffered choice among here?
Or which is the better choice?
Or is it a personal thing?

It depends on the dog and what kind of tracking you intend to do with it. Some dogs lack the motivation to track for toys. Some dogs are not interested in tracking for food. Some will only track for a man and a bite at the end of the track.
Also, you need to take a look at what you are trying to accomplish with the dog. Food is an outstanding motivator when you are trying to work out problems like quick starts or attempting to increase concentration. Food is also an outstanding way to teach a dog to hard surface track. Each dog and problem are specific and your choice of reward or motivation will vary with each case.

Sorry if i was not clear. It would be for a puppy, would you start them off with food? and it would be for Sch. i just read somewhere that you would get a better tracker if you started off straight away with articles and not ever use food. just wanted to know how everybody else did it. but i can understand how it could be either. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
For sport tracking, one of the ways in which you teach the dog what odors to follow and the manner in which to follow it, is to use food.
Food makes it very easy for you to be sure the dog is tracking the odor you want; in other words, there is less room for handler error. Also, using food slows the dog to some extent (depending on the method, drag or drop) and allows it to slow down to search each footprint.
The way I am approaching it with my dog, my end goal of training, is the dog uses the track to find the articles. The article becomes the reward. But you can only do that if you have taught the dog the way in which you want hime to search; ie, a deep nose, and not running down the track.
Gary patterson's Tracking from the Beginning is a great book for beginning trackers.
Anyone who tries to do sport tracking without food (esp a novice) is in for a long road. The food makes it clear for the handler as well!
