Hello. My husband and I are new GSD owners. Our girl, Mina, is 9 weeks old and 12lbs. When we first got her (1 and 1/2 weeks ago)we filled her water bowl full (approx 30 fl oz) and made it available till 7:30pm. She would have most of it drank within minutes and turn the bowl over shortly after. I seemed to be cleaning up pee every 15 minutes. This week I started rationing the water. I give her 6oz at 6am w/ food, 6 oz at noon, and 6 oz at 6pm w/food. The accidents have dramatically decreased. Is this enough water intake? When she goes out she takes care of business (1 and 2 pretty regular)then searches for little water holes in the yard. Mina's kenneled in the house 17 hours a day while we are at work and asleep. The other 7 hours she is moderately active.
Hi
Like you I'm a new owner so you may wish to wait for a more experienced wiew, but this is my experience:
I read the articles by Ed Frawley regarding House breaking & crate training & follwed to the letter & I mean strictly . Coming from England crate training was very alien to me but it works , My Mum thinks I'm cruel but then her 1yr old scottie is only "paper-trained"! Well, within 2 weeks we had a happy no-accidents puppy .We've had him nearly 2 months & he now rings a bell hanging on the door to go "outside".We crated him for periods durring the day and when we first got him he awoke at night & i carried him outside so he wouldn't have a pee on the way.Water was freely available untill 6.30pm when he was out of the crate.
I'd post a link to this great article but I haven't a clue how to do it! sorry.Maybe someone will help out and do it for me.Also not sure of water intake requirements I hope this helps...goodluck & enjoy your pup.
