When you use treats, do you have them in your dog's site or use a treat bag that will hint to him you have treats on you?
Try hiding treats on you or around your house so you can reward when he is least expecting and sits quickly when cued without a treat. Kinda like a surprise reward- He'll think, "hey, I didn't know treats were involved! Next time I will do it fast because I may (or may not) get a treat." Works the same way a DRE schedule increases motivation.
If you use a word marker, use it only when it ensures a treat. Use another form of praise if you don't have treats or ignore him completely if he is slow in response to your cue.
I agree with staying away from corrections. The problem is in his motivation more than disobedience.

Wow! hide treats around the house? No way that would last here in club overfed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
I think something that may help is to keep a couple treats in your pocket or palmed in your hand so the dog doesn't know they are there and "catch" him in the act of being good. I did this with my APB who is deaf while we are working on "sit and look at me" as a default behavior (when there are no commands).
