Im just a novice and would like to get involved in dogsports but from what Ive read about Sch there is no point to it anymore. The way I see it USA is not only losing members but people like me would not and will not join such a club.
If ever there was a time for the Sch community to rally it is now.Start your own club! You guys on this board who I have respect for could start a great working dog organization.Hey Ill join and I bet a lot more on this board would too.You guys have the knowledge and experience so go for it .Just my opinion.Make Sch a breed test first and a sport second. You can do it.We can do it.
Don't malign schutzhund because of the poor running of a National event.
The rank and file in USA feel much like I do (see my post under German Police and Schutzhund).
The sport is a great one, Ring isn't better, just different with its own political problems.
USA, like other sport clubs can be manipulated at times, other times the host steps up to control the problems. One example was at the '98 Nationals a very consistant competitor was found to not have compelted the rquirements for entry into the trial. The host booted him even under pressure to turn his head.
Much of the blame for apoorly organized, run event should be placed on the shoulders of the host.
Club members should have stood up and let the host know the rules weren't being followed and the cheif of judges intervened. Allowing such behavior should fall squarely on the shoulders of the host, and any misapplication of the rules by a judge should go to the judges committee.
It is the resposibility of the members to police their own.

Im not trying to rundown Sch .I think its a great sport.I hear everyone complain about the rules getting softer and softer.I was just suggesting that some of the more knowledgeable working dog people start there own organization similar to USA but with a priority to the working GSD and then secondly to the sport enthusiast.Bring back the harder tests and at least try to improve the breed here in the states.Dont soften rules so its easier to pass dogs and get more members.Harden rules so its more difficult to pass dogs and forget about how many members there are and worry about how many good dogs are being produced.
Maybe Im way off base here.If I am Im sure someone will let me know. All I hear is complaints and I just thought some of the complainers should do something about it.Perhaps they are already doing something.I hope so.
What is missing in Schutzhund today is "fun with out dogs". Winning has taken over and "fun with our dogs" has taken a back seat.
Winning is great but the experience of the game is what we will remember when we are sitting on the porch in the nursing home - or in my case - cleaning dog runs and playing with puppies when I am 80 years old.
We have a guy in the club. He's 82. Finished a SchIII on his older dog last fall. Got a puppy last summer and is working him in obedience, tracking and beginning protection. I'm kind of impressed. The dog is doing very well at this point.
I have one as well, he is 80 and is working his dog in ringsport. He has done exceptionally well with his dog. I would have given up on that dog. He has the patience of a saint. I do believe he will get a title on that dog yet!
Did anyone hear about three people in one tracking flight who all failed tracking and the judge then temporarily canceled the tracking only to let all three re-track in the afternoon – then 2 competitors fail a second time?
Quote:
yes, on Friday it was raining REALLY hard and lots of wind - I was the very first dog up in obedience at 7:30 am - had my dog ready to go then, and went on the field when the judge was ready at 8:30 am. Hurry up and wait, that was fun. I would have preferred to have the flight postponed until clearer weather - after all there were only 3 flights that day, trial was over by 1 pm - plenty of time to wait a while. But, no. The first flight of tracking was in the same weather - I asked tracking judge when I saw her at the stadium way early - she said first 3 dogs failed and so due to weather they put the tracking to the afternoon instead, allowing those 3 dogs re-tracks. I sure wish she had judged the AWDF tracking, when my flight had to track in a wind-downpour AND thunder/lightning strikes nearby! So they tracked later that afternoon, and I think one of those 3 dogs failed again, but the others passed, and 2 dogs that had not tracked that morning failed their track.

Is it true that the FH tracks had no cross tracks, no terrain change, no road crossings and were not long enough? Hummmmm
Quote:
I pulled my dog from the FH several days before the trial, because I decided to concentrate on the trial and scrap the FH stuff this time, not because of conditions. But, I heard that the FH tracks were very short, and no road crossing. I didn't hear anything about cross-tracks, terrain change or lack of. I know there were plenty of terrain changes in my Schh3 track though! And tracking conditions that I saw personally were completely different from flight to flight.
