My Dad had a springer mix which he got in 1999. This was one dog my Dad cherished the most. Oody was a smart dog, my dad could train her to do anything. She had the best ball drive I'd ever seen in a dog and she was just one of those pets that did anything for you. She had cancer for the longest time but Dad just didn't have the heart to put her to sleep. Well, three weeks before my Dad passed away, he discovered he had lung cancer. We decided that since Oody was in so much pain, we would put her to sleep. Dad passed away Monday, the 23rd and yesterday we buried Oody with my Dad so they could be together. The shelter had provided a nice urn for the dog which we put into his coffin. It was a fitting touch for the Master and his Loyal Friend to be together to the end. It was a funeral we'll never forget.

I wanted to add that we put Oody down the day before Dad passed away. Poor Oody looked so miserable but when my brother called her out to the pickup, she perked up and wanted to go. My heart went out to Oody because I knew she didn't know she wasn't coming back. The shelter who performed the service was kind to expedite her ashes so we could put her in his coffin. Dad never expected to be going as soon as he did and never thought of having his faithful dog buried with him. We did ask if he wanted that and Dad said yes. I feel good knowing that we had the opportunity to ask before he passed away. One thing I regret though is that we didn't add Oody's name to the gravestone so someone would know she is there with him. I will, however, add it to our Family History so if anyone reads it, they'll know they were buried together.
