So, how bout that beer now!...lol
That is a perfect example of why you should not mix alchohol and sleeping medication. My damn "service dog" should not have let me send that message!
My applologies.
Being a paraplegic, for almost 20 years I would not mind service dogs actually be certified. It should be made to pass a very rigorous obedience standard while also being able to protect if needed. The dog should actually be able to perform tasks the handler can't without the help of the dog. I would like to see disable handlers be certified as a handler. If the person can't handle the dog they shouldn't get one.
I have resisted the idea of owning a service dog. But after wearing both shoulders out from picking myself up and pushing a wheelchair. My opinion has changed, I currently have a 16 month old GSD female. I take her everywhere so far no complaints or problems. She picks stuff up for me and helps pull me up ramps that are too step. Her protection up to now has been thru prey drive only but she is showing a civil side. (She will spit out the sleeve and go for decoy if he steps up after giving the sleeve)
I would like to see more GSD and other protective working breeds trained for service. I also have plans on training my new GSD pup to assist me in some tasks. I know not all will need the protective nature of a good working GSD, but it's good to know it is there if needed.
As for people, wanting to pet your service dog I see that as a part of being a responsible owner to tell people to back away while my dog is working. It's hard when children come up and leave with sad eyes not able to pet her but it must be that way.
