I have just started researching raw feeding, and have come across something accidentally that concerns me. On another message board, someone mentioned salmon poisoning (they did not mean salmonella). Has anyone ever heard of this? Supposedly dogs can get deathly sick from eating raw salmon. I had no idea! I don't want to poison my dog, but I had heard that fish was one of the best meat sources for dogs. I won't be feeding any more until I figure out whether it's safe or not.
Thx

salmon poisoning is indeed dangerous. it is caused by feeding fresh, raw salmon from the pacific northwest. you don't need to worry about feeding salmon from other parts of the world.
actually it isn't just salmon that harbors this parasite, but all salmonids, which are fish that spawn in fresh water, and include trout.
you can either freeze the pacific northwest salmon for several weeks at 0 cent., or you can cook it. i prefer to feed canned salmon.
ocean fish that don't ever inhabit fresh water are perfectly safe, as are atlantic salmon.
if you have fed your dog raw pacific northwest salmon, and he does get salmon fever, the dog has an only 10 percent chance of survival. for this reason, most barf feeders avoid it.
