Kate: Just noticed a response on a different thread (one about diarrhea with raw food) that I think fits here as well, about the chicken wings (chopped v. whole):
QUOTE from Chip Blasiole: Billinghurst talks about chicken wings having the best ratio of bone to meat (I think he says it 60:40.) I was having the same problem and added more bone and the problem cleared up. I grind the chicken wings with a hand grinder. END
I tried the BARF diet before with a pup and had the same problem of the pup vomiting large pieces of bone, as well as moaning in pain, so I went back to kibble. With my current pup, I grind the chicken wings with a hand grinder that costs about $50. It is a little work, but not too bad if you are only doing BARF with one dog. I will consider going to whole wings after this pup gets his adult teeth. There are risks and benefits to feeding whole wings. The teeth are cleaned and the jaw muscles get worked. The risk is getting an intestinal blockage, which can be fatal. Chicken and turkey necks are mainly cartilage and have some bone. I really think if you go raw/BARF, you have to be careful about the bones and that you provide the right balance of bone/meat in order to provide the correct amount of calcium without an excess of protein and phosphorus.

Again, The Raw Dog Ranch explains this. On the spreadsheet that they put together, it gives the approximate percentages of RMBs, organ meats, and muscle meats on their example. Now, depending upon which RMB you feed, you may have to lower or raise the percentage of RMBs.

Wow! What an informative site! There a whole page devoted to "To grind or not to grind." This site gives much more info than the ones I used when I was researching B.A.R.F. years ago........
