I have raised both and really when I sat down and added up the costs I lost money <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> Now the crap is good for fert, espically rabbit because of high water content, chicken manure must be aged and mixed with caco3 to be used. I would just find a butcher and wholesale house who sell chicken quarters cheap and go with that. Remember those animals will need care all the time to, fresh water , food, oh and how bout predators. My old GSD killed 28 of my chickens one day while I slept. No mas

There IS no butcher or wholesale house in this area, Brad. As for predators, they wouldn't be just running loose in my yard - I found some really good plans for a raised 'hutch' that shouldn't be easy for a predator to get into. The only predators in my area are the neighbors' cats that they allow to roam loose. Our yard will soon be securely fenced too, so that will also help.
Like I said, I've raised rabbits before, so I know what's involved in that - I've just never raised them for butchering.

There are places in Asheville and Hendersonville NC where you can buy raw food parts. The M&M Meat Locker in Hendersonville has 30# boxes of turkey necks on hand all the time. In the fall when they are cutting up cattle you can get all the bones you can haul for a "donation." Wal-Mart has the same price on their 10# bags of leg quarters that you will find most meat dealers will sell to you for in mass quantities. Asheville Pet Supply on Merrimon Avenue sells premade raw foods as well.
They may not jump out to you, but with a little looking and asking you can find out where you can buy stuff. I have not even asked the ethnic food marts about various meats, but usually they have more than a decent selection and very good prices.
I have only been living here since the end May and found the above deals hardly trying.
Rabbits are too hardcore for me. No way I could slaughter them. When I was with my ex I couldn't let him feed the snake rabbits and we didn't even have to kill them!
