Can anyone who is well versed in the compounds of this drug please contact me off list. I have a large University Dept thinking about training their Narc dog to locate it. They are having MAJOR issues with the abuse of this drug and wanted to see what else could be done.
If it has a distinct, workable odor, just need to know what to isolate to train on..
CIBA-Geigy Corporation makes it and good luck getting them to be forth coming about a drug that is in the hot seat now.
It is supplied in 5 mg., 10 mg., and 20 mg. tablets, and in a sustained release form, Ritalin SR as 20 mg. Tablets. I suggest you use the 5,10 or 20 mg only because I do not know what makes the SR’s time released but no matter what it is it is a component you don’t need to add.
It is readily water-soluble and you can crush the tablets easily. I treat it as Meth.
It is a Schedule II Controlled Substance and you may need to look into a DEA research license and a State pharmaceutical license depending on your individual state requirements for using prescription drugs as training aids.

Josh,
You may run into trouble with probable cause issues by training the dog to find this substance. I would cousel the department about changing their dog from a narcotics detection dog to a contraband dog and its potential impact in the issuance of a warrant in which the affiant references the use of the canine in the probable cause statement.
They may not care as they only use the dog under the administrative guidelines, but it would be prudent to be sure they understand this. Once you go down this path you may as well have a dog that finds all contraband in the dorms (alcohol, fireworks, electric hot pots.....you name it).
I agree with Kevin on this. The dog may as well learn them all, as he should not ever work the street in a civil LE capacity away from the college.
I am glad Kevin brought this important consideration up. I have and do work with some colleges and they often like the idea of having the dog but later decide the dog was a bad idea (politics on campus… enough said) and hope to resell him to recoup some of the lost revenue. Unless they can sell the dog to other schools that have the same intentions as they do now the chances of unloading him are not so good.
The street k9 should not hit on prescription drugs for obvious reasons so they would not be able to sell him or even donate him to a community.
