On Wednesday, I noticed my shepherd had developed a very shrill/hoarse bark. There's been no change in his attitude, no increased swallowing or drinking, and no aversion to barking. He was not barking excessively prior to Wednesday and he has not had any neck/throat injuries that I know of. He does eat a raw diet, is it possible that one of the bones scratched his throat? Any ideas? Thank you!
PS- Any way I can have it resolved by Sunday? I don't think the other club members are going to appreciate his Poodle bark and hold.

It may be a transitory issue or it could be an indication of a problem. Until you know the answer or he recovers, treat him as if it's a worst case scenario since the worst case scenario is easily life threatening.
Use EXTREME caution working him in the heat, if at all. Use a harness not a collar (even a wide buckle collar). Keep him cool and minimize stress. The possibility exists that he could be starting laryngeal paralysis- not something to fool around with. The start can be a sudden voice change. Seen frequently, especially during the summer, in labs, it can happen in any breed. If it continues, worsens or he can no longer tolerate exercise see your local excellent vet or specialist.
Thanks for the article. Don't worry, you didn't scare me. We just went for a 4 mile trail run and he showed absolutely no signs of exercise intolerance. If it doesn't resolve in a week (or if he worsens) I'll take him in. I thought perhaps there was some magic cure someone would come up with, like gargling salt water or something. Well, here's hoping he gets better soon!

Jackie, if you can get your dog to gargle salt water for you, I think you need to open your own training school!!
