Hey gang, I just got my first working shepherd pup about 6 months ago, and was curious about when I should get his preliminary x-rays done? The puppy contract with the breeder said 18 months, and then I talked with a few people at the local club and they said they go for it at about one year of age. I was leaning towards the one year, but I was curious on any feedback or advice about this. Thanks!
One year will give you a good indication of the status of hips and elbows. If you do prelims at 18mos, well by then things are pretty much set and whatever you get as a prelim rating will be more than likely identical to what you would get at a 2yr rating. However, in order to honor your contract, you must do what you agreed upon with the breeder...meaning, if there was a problem and you agreed to prelim at 18mos, but did so at 12mos, the breeder might hold you to the contract and have you redo the Xrays at 18mos...I wouldn't, but not everyone is me.
I figured I would go with the one year mark for prelims because 18 mths I think is too long to wait, but you are absolutely right about honoring the breeders contract. It would just be a bummer to put time and money into the training and than later come to find out that your dog has bad hips or elbows.
I ask myself "what would I do if my dog had HD?" If you know that you wouldn't bother with surgery for certain, you could wait until 1 year just to avoid time and effort wasted. If you knew that you may consider surgery if you pup was diagnosed with HD, than I would do prelims no later than 8 months. The surgery of choice to halt the progression of HD is called a TPO and that should be done generally before 1 year of age. All depends on your goals for the dog.
