I think my 6 months old GSD puppy is developing a Lick Granuloma, which is a condition that a bald patch appears and the skin becomes ulcerated and sore. I have caught my puppy licking the spot very hard few times. The bald patch right now has a 1-inch radius on all sides.
Have any of you ever gone through this, and what treatment worked for you.
Thanks in advance.
One of my dogs came with a very large growth on her foot that was bleeding within a day of us getting her. The root cause was from being locked in a kennel with a concrete floor for most of the first year of her life, she licked the thing all the time and it built up. We bandaged the area with gauze and vet wrap while the wound was open which kept her from licking it. This helped the area shrink a bit and let it heal. The growth was originally about the size of a ping pong ball. About a year later it started changing shape so we had it excised.
She had another lick granuloma, much smaller/flatter than the first one, on her leg that we could not keep bandaged very well. The vet gave her a steroid shot and that took care of that one.
The cause of the first one was from constant contact on a hard surface. I'm not sure what started the second one, but I think there was something in her food that made her itch causing her to lick. We changed her diet and it's been about 5 months since we've seen anything similar and she doesn't lick as much.

Besides good answers already rec'd, the spray bottle called "Relief" both eases the itch/irritation and interrupts the licking. White bottle, blue label, made by DVM, OTC but sold at vets' offices.
Keep him really busy. Keep the wound clean. If it`s a paw or joint clean it, anti-bac spray and wrap it. Sometimes spraying the wrap with bitter apple will help. Believe it or not some vets will perscribe generic prozac.
The only thing needed for evil to exist is for good men to stand by and do nothing!!!
