I am with you on this one. I don't freak out about this kind of stuff. I am sure that parvo is a big fright to people, but the dogs you see out and about probably have the shots. I have had a lot of dogs and no parvo. I am not wasting the valuable early time with my puppy over this. If parvo is super prevalent where you live...move. I know that I would. I have watched what it does to puppies and dogs, I just have never had to deal personally.
We live in a very rural area, we have a decent amount of property and are surrounded by woods/creeks. With my pups I generally don't let them have the run of anywhere until they are over 9 weeks and have had all but one shot. Parvo doesn't worry me as much as distemper does and I know that where we live is rampant with coons, armadillos, opossum.. you name it (basically all the wildlife that can carry distemper). I chose a spot in the yard and the pup only ever goes to that one spot. I have been thru distemper with a pup (that was most likly transmitted via a coon (or such) and have no desire to do it again!
Only once they are done with their last shot do I take them out and about.
All this said, I am lucky enough that we train (club) on our own property so the pups get exposed to a LOT at an early age. Maybe I would feel/do things differently if I didn't have all that enviromental stuff/people at home..
