Do you guys take the dogs up to the sleeve level yourself, then use a helper? Or do you also work your own dogs with a sleeve? And is this for just competition dogs or also ppds?
That type of early exposure I feel made a huge difference with my pup. I got him at 8 weeks old having had all that early exposure before I got him. 2 days after I got him I took him to our club and he was taking off with peoples rattly keys and prong collars. Also chased one of our helpers out into the middle of the field in the dark.
I know genetics play a huge part in this but I think that early exposure set everything in concrete.
I think doing early helper work yourself keeps everything stress free and the pup percieves it as a comfortable game.( Plus I'm paranoid about dodgy helpers) Also once the pups ready for defensive type work his view of the helper is as a fighting partner not a fun guy who just changed the rules after 12 months of fun. I think that way its a more stress free transition in my opinion ( provided the pups had enough socialization).....but hey Im no expert!
