I'm very new to helper work also. I agree with everyone that you need to learn by doing. I attended a USA Helper Seminar and learned a lot. The good thing is after the seminar you have a chance to certify to do helper work at different levels (club, regional, and national level).
I do suggest Tom Rose's book "Dog Training With The Touch" it has a good chapter on helper work with lots of pictures and explanations. Obviously the book is not to be used alone but it does explain theory and gives you a good foundation to start with.
I'd pay it. Helper/Decoy seminars can be really hard to come by in my area, especially for police decoys. I went to one two years ago and this guy instructed police and military only. It was $300 for four days and worth every penny. Dog sports are almost non existant around hear and an 80 mile drive one way is the norm to find a trainer. But a 1200 mile drive to Flordia is alittle too far for me.
But we have Disney World!!!

Been there twice. Lived in Mebourne FL for a year. You folks can keep that incredibly oppressive heat and humidity. I'll stick to shoveling snow. You can always put more cloths on, you can only take so many off.
I to live in Florida, and would like to learn how to be an effective decoy. Also we not only have Disney World, but we have South Beach where you can take alot off and not end up in jail !!!!!!!!
If anyone knows of a club in West Palm Beach I would appreciate the info.

Terry, There is an ASR club formed in West Palm Beach ( we'll be listing ASR clubs and their point of contact on the ASR website soon ) called "ASR of West Palm" .
Most of the members are experienced SchH/ Ring Sport competitors.
