I have two questions. The first one is that I was wondering if it is not such a good idea to walk a dominant dog on the same walking route daily? On my lunch break I walk my dog and we have our usual walking route and I wondered if he might start to consider that whole area his territory? I don’t let him mark, except for 2 designated “potty places”. I am really comfortable with our route since I know which houses have dogs and I have it timed perfectly to fit within my break, but if it’s important to change things up a bit I can venture out and find alternative routes.
My second question – is it a bad thing to lie on the floor either with, or in front of a dominant dog? I mean is that the same thing as letting them on your furniture? I like to sometimes lie on the floor rather than my couch, because it feels better on my back and my dog will sometimes get up from where he is to lie next to me. Should I put him in his crate if I’m on the floor?
You are 100% correct in thinking that this area that the wod walks every day will be considered his territory. You are correct in only allowing him to pee in spot - not allowing the dog to mark the territory will help. But he will still consider this is territory.
People who think that their dog only looks at their back yard as their territory are misinformed. The case that I testified at in Kansas where the Rots killed the young boy was a perfect example.(the dog owner was convicted of murder and sent to prison for 11 years - not long enough in my opinion) These dogs would get out of their back yard and they considered an area of several blocks their territory.
If you lie on the floor and your dog lies next to you - you are probably OK. If he ever stands over you then off to the crate from that point on. Also - down allow him to roll opn his back and TELL YOU TO SCRATCH HIS STOMACH or TELL YOU TO PET HIM.
I am going to close this thread because this covers this topic.
