Normally a callous caused by hard floors, tile, concrete, etc.
Need to make wherever your dogs laying more comfortable or you'll pretty much always have them.
Yea I second that hard surfaces will cause these. My girl spent the summer lying on my parents' deck or patio during the day and I just noticed that she's starting to get calloused elbows too.
I've heard that once the callouses form they're tough to get rid of, but you could try some type of moisturizer and add more padded bedding and see if that helps. I'm probably going to use some tea trea/aloe stuff I have on Maggie to speed healing.
I think you have identified the problem, and it has to do with the deck. I can remedy the problem easily. Kind of thought the issue had to do with the occasional sleeping surface.
I've been using triple-antibiotic cream but am a bit concerned that I may turn a more or less 'normal' skin condition worse.
My dog has the same problem and I have been thinking to take him to the vet. Our house is carpeted and he has a sheep skin (or fake sheep skin) mat in his crate. I thought it might be some kind of infection or mange but it doesn't look like mange?
Elea gets that also. First time I used the triple antibiotic and increased her vitamin c by one tablet and it cleared right up and I lowered the c back. When she got it again I just upped the c tablet by 1 and left it there instead of decreasing it like I did the first time and she hasn't had a problem since. Shrugs, seems like vitamin c helped and we too have hard wood floors.
The problem manifesting on Freya seems to be related to how she reclines and where. I think the deck is part of the issue.
I think I'll try the vitamin c suggestion in concert with the triple-antibiotic, and with a placemat of some type which mitigates direct contact with the deck.
Freya is an almost-all-black GSD, and I often wonder if she just has more sensitive skin. The other two GSDs seem troubled.
I appreciate your taking time to respond to my post.
