My gsd pup is now 5 months and 1 week old. Ed's BDO video says not to correct dogs until at least 5 to 6 months. I am wondering, should I wait for another 3 weeks or could I put on the prong colloar now and not actually do any correction until 6 months of age. My pup desperately needs some obedience training, especially how strong she is getting. Popping her with a flat collar just doesn't get the message across very well. I don't know any temperament tests, but judging just from how hard I need to pop her when we are on walks, I believe she is a lvl7-8 dog in terms of correction. Thanks very much for your time and could someone please also explain to me why correcting a pup too early is detrimental to it's future training and temperament.
It's all about what you wanna do with the dog. If it's a pet then you are not concerned about the "picture" of OB. The other side is a SchH dog or OB dog you want the best picure you can get for the OB.
If it's a working dog your gonna work I would be putting many different types of collars on the dog for diff periods of time, etc. Fur saver, prong, flat, choke, e collar, etc...so its no big deal to him AND he wont associate the collar to anything. This is JUST wearing the collars...no correction.
Ed has an awsome dvd out called "Raising a working puppy". It would be worth the investment if you plan on working the dog.
I personnaly do motivational without any serious corrections for a LONG time on my pups. Makes for a good picture.
I would have to know more about your dog and situation to say anything else.
You say your puppy desperately needs some OB training. Did you just get her? Why have you not been doing OB? If you think that "Slappin on the prong" is going to be some miracle godsend when you haven't even started, I would back up and start teaching some obedience using markers and food. It takes 6-8 months to condition a response. I would take that into consideration before going to compulsion. You also state that you have to pop her pretty hard with the flat collar. I would say that 1. she doesn't know what you want, so why pay attention 2. You need to get someone to help you train, whether a video from Ed on the marker training, or an instructor locally. This way you can have a better plan then waiting till 5 months of age and "slappin on the prong"
