I have a tendency to be lazy with the long leash training because it always gets really tangled up and it becomes hard to administer a correction when it is running under his chest and through his legs. I end up spending so much time trying to get the line untangled and in a good position to administer a correction that training becomes very contrived and lacks spontaneity. I think my dog is picking up on this and associating long line work as a very specific activity.
Any thoughts on how to handle the long line better??? I use a thirty foot line. Should I be using a longer line? Particularly, for recall work once the long line is on my dog stays very close to me because he knows I am gonna call him so it is hard to set up a situation where he might not come while on the long line. It's like a game - okay the line is on so I better stay near him because he is gonna want to call me and he'll pop the line if I don't come so I better just follow him everywhere he goes.
