I have an 11 month old female GS I brought in from Germany as a 3 month old pup. I have been training for 3 months. Working on drive building and focus on me. I use the ball and string as a reward. When I present the ball as a reward for job well done, I have a tough time getting it back. I sometimes lift her off the ground by the leash and at the same time jerk the ball from her mouth. Drive goes up. I sometimes play tug with her holding the ball. I sometimes am able to open her mouth and get the ball back. I have pinched her flank as done in the training video. I feel that no matter how quick I am the dog is not that stupid to not know where that pain came from. also when I throw the ball for her to retreive she comes barreling back but runs just about one foot wide and does not bring the ball right to me. I am new to Schutzhund( as if you didn't already know that) Just wondering what I may be doing wrong. Any thoughts from great trainers appreciated.
Thanks,
Edwin
Good Question I too have an 11 mo old whom I have not taught the out to yet. I am no expert, but believe that you should keep doing what you doing until you feel ready to teach the out.
Throwing the ball (retrieve) should (in my opionion) be done seperate from other training. Using 2 balls the dog will come back quickly if she knows that you have another ball ready to throw. You can keep a long line on her to reel her in until she figures it out.
Good Luck <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />
In training my GSD to retrieve, who is very food motivated, a treat in my mouth kept him focused on my face while he was being reeled in with the training line - he knew he m
ust sit & then drop ball upon command in order to receive the treat..good luck
