My five month old puppy will start growling and barking with raised tail and hackles up at strange dogs. There was no previous attacks by other dogs so I'm inclined to think this is a genetic charactoristic. Her sire is quite dog aggressive and very civil. She was suspecious of strangers but that problem has been corrected by turning everybody into a treat dispenser and toykeeper. I talk to the guys at the club and they gave pretty much the same advice found in Ed's article http://www.leerburg.com/dog-agg.htm. I don't want to start nailing her with a prong just yet so I scheduled an appointment with a friend at the SPCA to see if there are any alternatives. Any advice from you guys would be appreciated.
If you have a friend with an older dog that is good with dogs I would go that route, with the whole routine of yes thats a dog running around loose and it is not paying any attention to you, so look at me and here is a treat. A very good way to get them to that place in life where dogs don't count.
If you don't think that would work, I have more!
Thanks, We just got back from the Sch club and I gave her just enough correction to get her attention, treated and did obed or play with her. I tied her out while the helper was working another older puppy in prey and she lost interest in the other dogs and wanted to get at the helpers tug so I think we made good progress tonight. A few more training sessions and I think I'll have it licked.
