I have an eight month old female GSD. When she pees on the lawn, it leaves a 4-6" diameter burn mark. The grass completely dies and doesn't re-grown. At first I tried to fix each spot but that turned into a full time job. I recently received a Doctors Foster & Smith catalog in the mail. They have a product called "Lawn Guard". The description says it eliminates the damaging effects of pet waste. It contains Yucca schidigera, prebiotic inulin, Bifidobacterium longum, Acidophilus lactobacillus, green tea extracts, and other heatly ingredients. Does anyone have any experience with this product or one similar? Do they work? Are there any side effects that I should be concerned about?

This essay out of Purdue about that problem has the point of view that these products are not much good, but it's 20 years old. I haven't personally tried them (and my yard shows that, but it's fescue and I don't much care; you probably have a much nicer lawn), but I also haven't heard any success stories.
They do mention diluting the spot with water within 8 hours as being an effective tool, if you are able to see where she's squatting. I HAVE heard neighbors' success stories with that method.
It's a pretty inclusive article. Scroll down about halfway for the heading "Repair/Recovery," following the Dietary Modification info.
Scroll down to this heading: About URINE SPOTS in LAWNS from DOGS
And there are a zillion articles about training the dog to go in certain areas, too, if you Google it, but that wasn't your question! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
