A friend has a three month old GSD with something called ”Carpal Subluxation Syndrome”. The vet said its so rare that that she doesn’t know what to do with it… apparently its more common in American line GSDs, which is why I’m asking here. Does anybody know if and how you treat this?
Carpal subluxation is that the dog is down in their pasterns a great deal. The carpals are in the dogs pastern area and subluxation is basically a partial dislocation of a joint. This is usually caused by loose ligaments for a developing pup. Sometimes the toes will splay out too. Don't over exercise a pup obviously but try to get her out alot so she can strengthen those joints as much as possible. I would put her on Vitamin C as well as something like Peak Grow.
They could end up coming up or they could stay that way or get worse.
It is mostly a genetic condition.

I have a dog with ZERO American Lines who is down in the pasterns. Granted he does have some West German Showlines in him, but I don't think other lines are immune from these problems. Agreed, my working lines GSD shows none of these problems and is very solid.
