I recently went to a" holistic" vet who gave my dog booster shots 1st yr. He said he used nosodes. He also had me switch from Heartgaurd Plus to Sentinel. And told me to use Frontline for fleas and ticks.Should I continue to use them in the winter,or stop once it gets to freezing tempetures. I live in Long Island N.Y. Thanks for any advice.Jerry
I can't believe a "holistic" vet would have you using stuff like Frontline. In my opinioin it's toxic to your dog and can cause serious problems. The only thing I do with my dogs is give heart worm prevention during the summer/spring months. I stop in the winter. I get them checked yearly to make sure they are clear. Since you live in a state where it gets cold and snowy you could stop for the winter. I wish I could even find a better alternative for Heartworm prev. but since I haven't I use it only in the spring and summer.
Just like with any other fad many veternarian's have jumped on the 'bandwagon' of calling themselves holistic when in reality they may not be.
There is also a difference between holistic and homeopathic. In general holistic emcompasses many things. (chiropractic, accupuncture, etc). Some holistic vets may be 'for' homeopathic remedies , some will not be. Some may be for raw feeding , some will not be. It is up to you to find out what 'holistic' means to your particular vet and does that defination fit with what you think or want?
I don't understand your fist statement. Did the vet give your dog vaccines or nosodes? HUGE difference.
I personally do not use any flea 'killer' (they are not preventative, most kill adult fleas) but I have not had any problems with fleas since my dogs have been on raw food. (and yes, I live in an area where fleas are very bad and all year round). I am not up to date on the flea and tick products but I do know that one 'type' is preferred because it is not as toxic as others. Thay may be why this vet recommened one above the other. You should always ask WHY!!!! when your vet tells or recommends something.

As far as ticks go on Long Island, they're around year round. A friend kicked over a paper plate lying alongside the road out on Montauk one cold winter day a couple of years ago, and underneath the plate crawled several ticks.

AS far as I know, nosodes do not come in a 'vaccine'. They are either 'drops' or in a homeopathic remedy (little white balls, that are crushed) and put under the tongue or on the gums etc.
Now, perhaps I am not 'up to date' on this..but I have never heard of them in a vaccine form.
For ticks, I recommend preventative in the form of spraying an oil and water base on my dogs if they are going to be in the 'woods' or tall grass. I do live in an area that has ticks but...not like some.
