I don't know anybody with a search dog from my area that has been snake trained....one fellow does but he moved here from California.
1) Would a dog trained on snakes notice the scent if they were working human scent at the time? Of course that curiousity does jump back in when they are NOT working.
2) Most of my encounters with snakes have been that the dog runs by so fast that the handler is the one who gets to meet them (after multiple such encounters this spring I bought snake gaiters for me).
3) I still have concern though since we do have water mocassins all around and several species of rattlesnakes in the mountains.(but the most common are copperheads)...the copperheads are just a nuisance though they can be aggressive I have seen a lot of dogs with copperhead bites and it seems no big deal.

I think it's a function of how often the handler thinks he'll be searching in snake country.

I have no doubt that they'd notice the scent. While, of course, they shouldn't alert, they might go investigate. That could get them bitten.
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer.
Nancy, as Lou said, I have no doubt they would smell the snake. It's like the cake explination when talking about a dogs scenting abilities. When a human walks in the house and smells a cake baking, a dog smells the eggs, flour, shortening, etc. They smell all of it but have no problem separating it.
I receintly went to a cadavar training seminar in Oklahoma. Three of the dogs there were from the Panhandle area of Texas and ALL of them had snake proofed their dogs.
Growing up, I had/have a huge interest in herps (snakes, lizzards, etc). I think the Cotton mouth is one of the worst. A Copperhead or rattlesnake will bite and move away if possable. The Cotton mouth usually goes ballistic and keeps hitting with multiple bites. Even the common Banded watersnake has a really nasty attitude. I've been on many searches in the swampy areas of Southeastern Mo. The Cotton mouth is the ONLY snake that makes me just a tad edgy.
