Ok, you all know I picked up my pup yesterday (Oct 1) and he's 4 or 5 months old. I don't think he's ever been on a leash before because as soon as he feels the pull on his collar, he yelps and jumps and twists and pulls to get away. As soon as the tension lets up, he's happy and bounces right over to you. I haven't been letting him fight, because I don't want him to associate the leash with fear or whatever, but I can't back-tie him or take him on walks because of this. What do I need to do?

I think you are 'thinking into this' too much. Give him a couple of days.
All young pups do this at some point of another, I personally just ignore it and carry on walking LOL, they soon get the idea that it is much more pleasant to comply.
If the pup DOES end up associating it with fear, then it has a serious nerve problem.
my experience jibes with sammy's. just ignore it and keep on walking. the pup will take its cue from you. when it sees you are not perturbed and that he isn't changing anything with his behavior, he'll settle down.
You need around three weeks to properly bond with your dog. I would start by being a treat machine for sticking with me in the backyard with the leash dragging. Don't use the good leash for this. Do it when he is hungry, and it will be a bit smoother. Also, don't forget to be as interesting as possible so that you are the best thing out there.

Gotcha. Thanks guys. I think I just won't try to actually take him for any walks for awhile, and just do what Jeff suggested. He sticks pretty close to me anyway, and already prefers me to hubby, though he will go up to hubby to solicit lovin' if I ignore him. LoL But if we're all outside and I have to go in for something, he stands on the front porch and whines until I come back out, and if I disappear around the corner of the house, he comes shooting around the corner after me. That's good, right?
