if you are trying to calm down a dog and be nice to him when he/she is showing teeth and snarling, couldn't that be interpreted by the dog as being rewarded for aggressive behavior?
Short answer is yes, soothing a dog when it is showing aggression is reinforcing the behavior. The key to fixing this type of problem is correct timing of the correction. You need to correct the dog at the first sign of an aggression/fear response. In a case like this I would answer the door with the dog in heel, and as soon as the dog showed the first sing of getting worked up I would use a light correction back to heel. Lots of praise when the dog is calmly in heel position and I would have everybody who comes in give the dog treats while the dog is sitting calmly. Of course I also think that a GSD is the wrong breed to get if you want people to freely walk in and out of your house without you being around.
Yes Jason, this is exactly what I am currently doing with her. The people that enter my home our my grown adult children and their friends. They do not knock. I have a female adult german shepherd/ age 5 that lets people come in and she would never do anything. I will continue to set her up and work on the situation. If it does not improve, she may not be adoptable and will have to be put down. A sad thing indeed, but I can not have her harm someone.
Then again aggression of this type can also be interrupted, as long as the dog is not stressed out to much with the offer of food. Keep the offer of food as nuetral as possible ie as you are going by. If they are not really stressed out it works pretty well. However, if it is weak nerves there is a good possibility that the dog won't eat. The corrections with a dog with weak nerves can be disastrous and cause more problems. Really interesting problems.
