Hey Y'all
I have a 9 mos old GSD (Coach) He was running and rough housing with my Golden Ret. (Noley) last night and today I noticed that he is limping. I checked his paw and his leg and did not find anything that was obvious to my untrained/ inexperienced eye. He still charges around with Noley and has no difficulty running, but when he walks he is limping. It is the day before Thanksgiving and my vet is out of town until Monday, is there anything I can do for him if he begins to have pain? He does not appear to be in any discomfort when laying down, so I have been keeping him in his crate and only letting him out for food and to relieve himself. He will get the first available appointment with the vet, but I just want to be prepared in case he gets uncomfortable.
Thanks
Terry
Petco/Petsmart sell aspirin labeled for dogs. I use aspirin labeled for humans with the instructions I recieved from my vet after my dog was spayed (in August 2004).
A healthy adult dog may recieve 1 - 81 mg enteric coated aspirin tab per 15 pounds of body weight, twice a day, for discomfort. Do not crush, do not give to dogs less than 15 pounds, do not give to cats.
I hope your dog doesn't need this! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I have taken young GSDs to the vet for limping and been told that they had pano. They would limp on one leg for a week or so, and then a month or so later might limp on another leg. The dogs were very active and I figured a sprain of some kind.
They seem to have grown out of it, except for the youngest -14 mos - who occasionally limps. The limping in no way slows her down.
Then too, I could be real wrong. A trip to a good vet is never a bad thing, if only to reduce your concern.
I think my dog suffered from pano, too. I never got a vet's diagnosis of it, but the breeder described it as a "growing pains" type affliction. I kept dragging him to the vet because he was limping, and they could find nothing wrong. He wasn't helping them, either. It didn't seem to hurt to the touch. It seemed to come and go until the last 3mos or so, and I haven't seen any more limping. I think he's just about done growing (I hope). He was given an anti-inflammatory, and it seemed to help only a little. Even limping, he didn't want to play any less, though. At that stage, he was so darn clumsy and lumbering, that it could have been anything though-very accident prone!
