After the other dogs go out, he lies on his back and begs me to rub his stomach. Or climbs into my lap and leans back. I think he wants to be collected.
I'm sorry to interject on such a good thread, but I really had to hold back an explosion of laughs on that one!

I had to grin, too.
The last vet I worked for did a lot of repro work, and we had a sperm storage facility on site. One of the males that was "collected" with regularity was a gorgeous Akita who learned what his duty was very quickly. After a few visits, he didn't even need a standing female in the room anymore- he knew darned well why he was there. I have never seen a dog so HAPPY to walk into a vet's office.

Here I am again, responding to my own posts.
A friend of mine, a successful breeder, sent me the following:
"I just read your comments, I do know that the vet we used to use tried to AI one of my dogs years ago. Joe took the male to the vet, called me at work that there were no live sperm! Went home got another male, same thing, went home and got the last male, better known at The Stud King. he also had no live sperm. The vet tech called me, told me to go to the store and buy baby bottle liners. She used them and had luck, seemed the liners the company had sent her to use had been washed in something that killed the sperm! One of the techs at the company had the same problem."
I suppose one must assume every condom-shaped thing has been dredged with spermicide unless it's labelled for use in insemination. I found one web site that was talking about artificial insemination for paraplegiacs (humans). They were worried about the black tip on the plunger of syringes, these might be latex and spermicidal. They had no real proof, but they were worried.

Thanks for reading my posts!

I have! We did quite a bit of AI in English Bulldogs. (A breed that Would Not Exist without veterinary intervention) One of the males we saw a lot would practically tear the door down to get to the treatment room.

I am still trying to breed these two little Schnauzers, Charlie and Berry. They are each two years old. Currently, Berry is day 12. This is their third heat trying to breed, and no tie to date.
Charlie tries very hard with no success. Berry's shoulders are covered in drool. Using sterile technique, including gloves, I put my little finger into her bottom. It only seemed to be 1" long with a tight area at the top. In reading, I find there is this thing called the cingulum between the vestibule and the vagina in bitches. It's supposed to relax, but might not, and this can prevent the tie. Reading again, the treatment seems to be artificial insemination. I can do that, maybe. Again, reading, the cingulum will usually not prevent normal delivery, although it might.
I would take her to the vet, but the group of vets my pups go to seems to specialize in some other area of veterinary medicine. When I ask them about reproduction, they take the fifth.
I hope you folks might know something about this. Do you have any advice for me?

Hey, hey! Got a kit for AI in small dogs, she's due in 9 days! She's gained 4 lbs. I can feel the pups wiggle thru the abdominal wall.

SCHNAUZER ALERT!!! --- SCHNAUZER ALERT!!! --- SCHNAUZER ALERT!!!
Two and a half years later, Charlie and Berry FINALLY TIED! The trick was to grab the hair on her bottom lip (back, not front) and pull it down. This changed the angle of entry, opened the passage, and provided the necessary stability for a successful tie. Probably helpded that they are older and have less interest in playing with me when I try to handle them while they are trying to breed. It's been 3 weeks, she's getting bigger and bulging! YAHOO!
