Mid-level drive dogs can also be good at protection work. With most litters of puppies there is a bell-shaped curve with drives. Bet Ed could pick out just the right puppy for this....with an empty nest you'll be able to save some money!!!
As for Mals in the house....my female is out of Cindy's first Nitro x Aera litter. She is high-drive, defensive and fairly sharp and has been reliable alone in the house for 4-5 hrs at a time since she was about 15 months old. So it is possible!!! Will have to add that I have tried my best to handle and train her the way Cindy has suggested and she is exactly what Cindy told me she would be....!!!!Since I live in the south and Cindy lives in the way far away north Will Rambeau has helped me tremendously and I have the best dog I have ever owned! Cannot say enough good things about these three people as breeders/trainers.
thanks for all the really excellent thoughts and advice. i'm still learning the vocab here (by the way, i tried the search fuction to find a definition of "civil drive" and couldn't find a clear one--help?), and i'm not afraid of drive per se, at all. but i'm thinking of will's Fetz, and i absolutely know i couldn't deal with a guy like that. but a good breeder wouldn't sell me one like that anyway (i hope). i don't want a cheap dog, but when it comes down to investing $1000 in a pup, i want to do it right for the dog and myself, and i've read about enough scams on this website that now i'm paranoid. i have time though, and that should give me time to do research and keep learning until i make the big investment.
appreciate the input--i'll have to start a notebook..
would you not like in any other field use The Sire and dam as a Gauge? We breed cattledog to cattledog that has the traits we want.
Would you not find a litter who both Parents show Prey and defence drive?
Your correct about good breeders not selling you a dog like Fetz. Those are few and far between, and they keep those for themselves.
