I did a search, but I must not be that good at it because I didn't really find the answer I was looking for. I apologize if this subject has been talked to death already.
I have my Cane Corso on the Raw diet and he's doing great on it. Tonight, for the first time, he pooped out straight bone. There was no poop around it, just pure bone. I know I read SOMEWHERE that by adding a bit of apple cider vinegar to the meal, it should help digest the bone a bit better. Does that sound right? If so, how much ACV? Also, as long as he's passing the bone, it shouldn't be a problem right?
Some of his meal he just swallows and some of it he chews up. I assume these bones that he's passing straight are from the parts of the meal that he's just swallowing. Anyone see a problem with this?
It's not unusual for dogs first switched to poop bone--they're bellies are still learning how to digest it. If there wasn't any dark blood (not the bright red stuff--that's not unusual either, from the bone scraping the skin as it came out and nothing to worry about unless it becomes the normal course of things--but the dark red, almost black, goop that indicates it's been digested and therefore came from further up the intestine) then there's nothing to worry about. Normally it comes out as bone wrapped in poo, but my GSD pup recently pooped out some straight bone a week or so after starting him on raw, so it happens.
The purpose of feeding bone is for the dogs digestive system to suck the calcium out of the raw bone leaving a 'dust' that forms into a stool. These stools go "poof" once you step on them a day later.
If your dog is not able to absorb the calcium out of the bone, I would add some enzymes to help. Yes, it is not unusual for them to need this kind of a boost when first switched to raw. Another alternative is to feed the chicken bones ground. This will help tremedously for the dog to digest and get the most out of it. Also a good idea for older dog or sick dogs. The body works hard to digest food. If a dog is older or sick, it is nice to allow thier energy go to healing rather than digesting.
