Bob Neijts is a Dutch friend of mine. He has had 15 years experience in the KNPV training and is an avid follower of the sport. The KNPV stick attack is much different than the "stick hits" in schutzhund. The KNPV is more difficult for the dog because the stick hit comes before the bite and not after the dog is biting. This article gives you one mans ideas on the Dutch methods for training this exercise.
In this exercise the dog has to find an large object (mostly a wooden box) which is hidden in the woods and has to bark at it as long as it takes his handler to come to him. Actually the training of this exercise starts as a very young dog. The first thing your dog has to learn is to bark on command. That is why I repeat the bark exercise first.
All the heeling exercises (on and off leash, next to the bike) the down stay all the jump exercises (hedge, fence and pit).
This part of the training is not very difficult to train. You start with a food pan filled with frankfurters and place it at the start of the heeling, next to the jumps or next to the place where you will do the down stay. You have to make sure that you keep the dogs attention and give him a correction when he wants to sniff or eat it.
The field where the small articles search, (like a small key, a coin or a bullet shell), is done is about 200m2. There are three articles to be found. The max. Time is 10 minutes to get the full score the dog must finish within 3 minutes. At the signal from the judge you can start the exercise. You are allowed to use your arm together with a verbal command (zoeken).
The KNPV is an organization which is 90 years old. The start of the KNPV was at a protection dog trial in 1907. It has started as an organization to bring people, who train their dogs, together and establish a good quality of working dogs. In the early days they would let their dogs do anything to proof their courage like jumping off a bridge.
This exercise is not very hard to teach to dogs who have a natural desire to protect. Much more difficult is it to train dogs who have a lack of guard drive. Still every dog can learn it but to the second group it is going to take a little longer. Let me tell you first how the exercise has to be done at a certification trial.
The championships are held every year on the first weekend in September in Den Bosh Holland. They are always in the deViliets Stadium. If you want to attend the Championships, I recommend the following Hotel (which is only a couple of miles from the stadium).
Both started in the early 1900's. Schutzhund and KNPV are great European dog sports. Schutzhund originated in Germany and the KNPV began in Holland.
Schutzhund was started by Amax Avon Stephanitz who is the founder of the German Shepherd breed. He designed the sport of schutzhund to be used as a tool by breeders.
